Le parole di questo "cantore" compongono un vero e proprio poema orale sulle origini dell'universo, una cosmogonia africana non lontana dalle grandi cosmogonie classiche. En 1931, Marcel Griaule, accompagné de Marcel Larget, Michel Leiris, Eric Lutten, Jean Mouchet, plus tard rejoints par André Schaefner, Déborah Lifszyc, Gaston-Louis Roux, s'embarquait pour une mission de deux ans en Afrique - la mission Dakar-Djibouti - organisée par l'Institut d'Ethnologie de l'Université de Paris et le Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle. C'est dans les falaises de Bandiagara au Soudan Français (aujourd'hui Mali) que l'équipe rencontra pour la première fois les Dogon de Sanga et commença à rassembler en une enquête interdisciplinaire une riche documentation sur les traditions et la religion dogon. En particulier Marcel Griaule devait dès cette première expédition et au cours de deux missions ultérieures en 1935 et 1937 s'intéresser à l'institution de l'awa, sociétés des Masques impliquant l'ensemble des hommes dogons. Masques dogons, classique plusieurs fois réédité depuis 1938, est à la fois réflexion et interrogation sur la signification et le rôle de cette institution.

L'Ubangi, en Afrique centrale, est une région à la croisée des chemins et des influences. Sa sculpture est longtemps, et tout à fait à tort, restée méconnue. Cet ouvrage décrit et compare les étonnantes lignes artistiques fleurissant dans cette région fortement transnationale, située entre la forêt pluviale dans le sud et la savane dans le nord, entre les populations parlant différentes langues bantoues, ubangiennes et soudanaises, entre les sociétés politiquement décentralisées au centre et à l'ouest de cette région et les anciens royaumes de sa partie orientale. Au cœur de ces différences, des points de convergence existent bel et bien, comme l'initiation des adolescents, les associations fermées ou les cultes de guérison et de fertilité. Lors de ces rituels, de superbes objets d'art étaient traditionnellement utilisés. L'art ubangien, notamment caractérisé par des sculptures en bois de figures humaines mesurant entre 10 cm et 2 n1 de haut, affiche une puissante cohérence visuelle; les instruments de musique, amulettes et autres objets usuels présentant de nombreuses similitudes formelles avec ces figures, lies masques et autres objets initiatiques, ainsi que des photographies de l'époque coloniale illustrent la présence de certains rituels parmi des popul1tions voisines. C'est la première fois qu'une monographie est consacrée à cet héritage artistique tout à la fois varié et splendide.

L'anthropologue Jan-Lodewijk Grootaers, qui en assure la direction scientifique, a effectué plusieurs voyages d'étude au sein des populations ubangiennes; il a également fait des recherches dans des archives missionnaires et autres.

These two books by the same publisher are very similar in a number of ways?they are designed to accompany major European exhibitions; contain hundreds of visually impressive photos of some of the finest works of African artistry; and cover the art of Africa while emphasizing the sculpture of West and Central Africa. These similarities aside, the books differ significantly in terms of the nature of the text and the focus of the content. Early in the 20th century a small number of European collectors acquired significant collections of African art. Han Coray (1880-1974), a modern art dealer in Zurich, was one of the earliest of those collectors, and his extensive collection eventually became the property of the Zurich University Ethnographic Museum. African Art is a catalog of that collection, with over 300 photographs of the objects. While most of the catalog entries provide useful information about the objects, some are unsatisfyingly only descriptive. More than a dozen essays are also provided, while some are scholarly and informative, many are personal reflections on and reactions to the collector and the collection, which some readers may not find especially enlightening. African Masks explores the nature of one of the most important categories of art in Africa. An excellent introductory essay by scholars Maria Kecskesi and Lazlo Vajda succinctly discusses the roles of masks in African societies and explains variations in their form and aesthetics. Almost 250 masks in the Barbier-Mueller Museum collection are cataloged with brief entries and small but fine black-and-white photos. The major portion of the book consists of large-format color plates of selected masks with extensive, scholarly notes by Hahner-Herzog. Many of the plates are accompanied by outstandingly useful field photos of the masks as worn by fully costumed performers in their indigenous context. L'Art africain n'a pas la vocation de donner une vision exhaustive de son sujet. Comme le soulignent d'entrée les auteurs: L'art africain, en effet, semble déjouer toute entreprise de présentation unitaire. Successions d'entités aux contours distincts, cumul des expressions spécifiques à chacune des cultures particulières qui le composent, son tableau n'en restituerait que la somme des disparités. C'est donc avant tout au spectacle de la diversité que se consacre cet ouvrage. Issues d'ethnies et d'aires stylistiques multiples, les cultures africaines n'ont pas développé leur art de la même manière. Si les masques et les statues restent la production la plus emblématique de la tradition artistique africaine, les codes esthétiques varient selon le lieu d'origine. L'ouvrage, qui s'adresse avant tout à des spécialistes, s'attache tour à tour au regard pilote, à l'hypothèse naturaliste, à l'approche fonctionnaliste et au plaisir de voir. Un excellent descriptif des principales ethnies permet aux lecteurs moins initiés de mieux s'y retrouver.

Voilà un ouvrage qui aura incontestablement fait date. Il y a une vingtaine d'années, les auteurs, Jean-Louis Paudrat, Lucien Stéphan, Françoise Stoullig-Marin, mobilisés autour de Jacques Kerchache, tentaient la synthèse qui manquait jusqu'alors sur l'art africain et qui était évidemment attendue dans la collection " L'Art et les grandes civilisations". L'entreprise précédait toutes les publications globales ou partielles réalisées au cours des années 1990 autour d'expositions sur les arts africains. Avec l'ouverture du musée du quai Branly, une édition totalement remaniée et enrichie d'une centaine de pièces s'imposait. La plupart d'entre elles proviennent de ce nouveau musée, mais aussi de musées allemands, anglais ou américains. Donner à voir l'art africain dans son contexte artistique même, c'est le principe qui guide l'approche ici proposée. Les œuvres ne sont pas perçues de manière isolée mais confrontées les unes aux autres, ce qui permet d'appréhender par le jeu des oppositions et des similitudes, des redondances et des variations, l'univers dont elles émanent et ce qu'elles en représentent. Loin de la contemplation dévote ou de la curiosité purement ethnographique, ce livre offre une approche globale sur la sculpture africaine en abordant aussi bien les questions de style que celles des fonctions.
