This book's greatest strength lies in both George Meister's exquisite photography, which highlights the visual power of the collected objects, and in Roy's extensively researched catalog entries. Depuis un siècle, des arts non européens sont entrés dans le patrimoine culturel occidental. Ce livre propose une démarche novatrice: à partir d'une étude pluridisciplinaire de la statuaire des lobi et des Dagara du Burkina Faso, présente une analyse critique sur la place de l'oeuvre «d'art africain» en général dans l 'esthétique classique occidentale. Bien qu'elle ait une dimension philosophique, la critique se nourrit de considérations anthropologiques.
