In this specialized but illuminating work, Harvard-trained anthropologist Steiner analyzes the assumptions behind the work of native African art traders in Cote d'Ivoire, who serve as the link between African artists and Western collectors. He describes the trading process as not only a complex economic system but one of shifting cross-cultural exchange in which the image of Africa is continually redefined. Steiner classifies the range of sources and art objects available in the trading city of Abidjan, then describes how traders work. He analyzes different forms of bargaining (from careful negotiation with Western dealers to staged performance for tourists). More intriguingly, he argues that Western scholarship has influenced classification of art objects by ethnicity rather than by region, and observes how Africans seek authenticity in things Western, while visitors want symbols of a "primitive" lifestyle--as when he witnesses the barter of a mask for a Seiko watch. In the West, he notes, the practical value of African objects like baskets is ignored, while an obsession with the growing value of African art tends to negate appreciation of its beauty. Au sein de la littérature sur les masques de l'Afrique subsaharienne, ce sont surtout les masques en bois sculpté qui ont retenu l'attention des chercheurs. Les publications sur le bassin du Congo n'ont pas fait exception à cette règle. Ainsi, le catalogue d'exposition 'Face of the Spirits', publié en 1993 à l'occasion d'une exposition du même nom à l'Etnografisch Museum d'Anvers, ne montre, sur un total de cent treize masques, que cinq exemplaires en fibres tressées (2). La rareté de ces objets dans les collections occidentales est due, entre autres, au fait que les matières utilisées résistent mal au transport et aux changements climatiques. Il faut sans doute également voir dans cette lacune une explication d'ordre esthétique. En effet, les premiers collectionneurs d'art africain, se laissant guider par des idéaux occidentaux, ne prenaient en considération que des matières jugées nobles telles le bois, les métaux ou l'ivoire. Pourtant, hormis des masques en bois sculpté, plusieurs peuples du bassin du Congo ont produit des couvre-chefs et couvre-visages en fibres et autres matières plus éphémères. Or, bien qu'ils soient occasionnellement mentionnés dans des publications spécialisées, les études approfondies les concernant font aujourd'hui toujours défaut (3).

L’”Enciclopedia degli Ibeji” porta invece alla identificazione del luogo di origine ritrovando, tra le oltre 500 foto di Ibeji proposte, la foto dell’Ibeji simile al vostro.
Fausto Polo ritiene che i validi scultori di Ibeji sono stati alcune centinaia, e li quantifica in un numero compreso tra i trecento ed i quattrocento.
E gli scultori di Ibeji, come del resto la maggior parte degli scultori tribali, si sono sostanzialmente ripetuti nel tempo, facendo e rifacendo quasi sempre lo stesso modello.
