The Authenticity of African Sculptures

by Henri Kamer

The issue of authenticity of African art has been central to collectors for decades.  Henri Kamer, who was president of the International Arts Experts Association at the time, published an outstanding account of the state of the matter in Artes d'Afrique Noire, No. 12 (1974).  The text  that follows is extracted from an English translation of that article, and has been edited further.  The original includes a number of illustrations.  They are not included here because I believe the text suffices without them.

The original version, including the illustrations, in French and with the English translation, is

From Library Journal: Kilengi is a Bantu term meaning "joy arising through beauty," a telling insight into the importance of art in Africa. This catalog in coffee-table format was produced to accompany a traveling exhibition of Walter Bareiss's African art collection, previously in Iowa City and now in Purchase, NY. The collection, although only recently assembled, is intriguing because of its high quality and because it focuses on East and South Africa, regions often overlooked. Roy's introduction incisively criticizes scholars' and collectors' overemphasis of West African art. His essay describing the major categories of objects represented in the collection is not innovative in approach but will be useful for the general reader. This book's greatest strength lies in both George Meister's exquisite photography, which highlights the visual power of the collected objects, and in Roy's extensively researched catalog entries. Overall, this is a visually stunning, very reasonably priced publication; highly recommended for any library with an interest in African art.AEugene C. Notes succinctes sur les masques kalengula des Luntu et des peuples voisins (R.D.C.)
(première partie)
Constantin PETRIDIS (1) in Arts d'Afrique Noire arts premiers Automne 2000 N° 115

Book Description: How the "unique" look of African art captured the imagination of artists such as Picasso and Stieglitz is well known. But how do art aficionados today see African objects? And how does our view compare to the way in which these objects were seen in Africa? Presenting the William and Bertha Teel Collection for the first time, this book provides a chance to think about how our vision of such objects is shaped by the "ethnographic," "primitive," or "modern" labels that have been applied in the West, and to compare it to how those same works were viewed in their birthplace. Lavish, full-color illustrations of over 100 choice objects combine forces with essays by leading African art specialists Suzanne Preston Blier, Michael Kan, and Edmund B. Gaither, and object descriptions by the collector himself, to provide a thoughtful and visually stimulating examination of these important African forms--as well as of the dynamic relationship among their creators, their original cultural contexts, and the Western viewing public. Essays by Suzanne Preston Blier, Michael Kan and Edmund B.

From Library Journal
Associated with an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, this book provides a survey of 100 visually spectacular objects from Africa. As befits current thinking, the catalog (and exhibition) surveys the entire continent, including ancient Egypt and Nubia and north and northwestern Africa as well as the sub-Saharan region. Each object is reproduced in color and accompanied by extensive catalog entries written by over 60 expert contributors. The catalog section is preceded by five essays contributed by major scholars in the field. The essays discuss the nature of African art and its appreciation. Gates's article on the ambivalence displayed by 20th-century Western appreciation and Suzanne Blier's essay on the myths and misconceptions surrounding African art are especially valuable contributions. Highly recommended for any library with an interest in African art.?Eugene C. Burt, Art Inst. of Seattle Lib.

Ritual use of these objects is expected to ensure a healthy birth, successful hunt, or triumph over an enemy. Analysis of the scholarly record illuminates the changing visions of leadership and prestige that fostered the development of the majestic, elaborate figure styles long prized in the

ISBN-10: 287939032X - ISBN-13: 978-2879390321
Descriptions du produit:The Northern Hemisphere has long looked at the art of the Southern Hemisphere and equatorial regions as a collection of curios or travel trophies illustrating the essentially barbarous nature of its creators. Slowly such views are changing as more effort is put to understanding the individual works of art and their context in the societies that produced them. Art historian Meyer has attempted to integrate over 200 color photos together with a general text giving an overview of the role of the arts in various African cultures. Although her choppy text (translated from the French) will provide a basis for interested readers to start research, the bibliography is dated and leads mostly to French sources. Rather than present an overview, Newton, the former director of New York's Museum of Primitive Art, has produced a catalog of suberb photographs with scholarly explanatory captions. The objects, mostly of wood, are drawn from Geneva's Barbier-Mueller Museum, considered one of the best collections in the world. Photographed with great depth of field and subtle lighting designed to accentuate texture, the sculptures are brought to life by a fine-grain printing process. Meyer uses some photos that also appear in Newton's book, but the two works complement each other rather than overlap. The Newton book is the better choice for general collections, but the differences in explaining societal context and the different scope of coverage warrant placement of both books in comprehensive collections.
